Tourism in Napa

Napa Valley has certainly learned how to manage its tourism. Known as one of the most cherished viticultural spots in the United States, Napa Valley is home to more than 300 wineries, which produce popular wines such as merlot, zinfandel, and chardonnay. The valley itself is in fact a county, located just north of the San Francisco Bay area in California. Napa Valley contains several towns, including American Canyon, Calistoga, Napa, St. Helena, and Yountville, as well as a number of unincorporated smaller towns. It is not surprising, then, that such a large area cultivates so many grapes -- Napa Valley is home to some well-known brands such as Mondavi and Beringer, among others. Because of its high-profile status among American wineries, Napa Valley wineries have developed a booming tourist industry, complete with quaint accommodations, top quality restaurants, and guided tours. Many of the wineries are open to the public, though some remain private. Some of the public wineries become so crowded in the peak season that they require appointments, in order to reserve the correct number of tastings, guides, and transportation, which is sometimes included in wine packages.
